STORYTELLERS – PART II
The forest is a cathedral. The trees are so tall. Everywhere roots, mosses, ferns, shrubs, lichens, in the fog. This is one of the rarest forest forms on our planet. The temperate rainforest is located at the Pacific NW coast of North America. In no other ecosystem, there is more biomass. This is home of the Haida, Tlingit and Tsimshian people. Only in this remote area you can find the monumental, confusing, misunderstood, and amazing objects, called totem poles.
Hydaburg, on Prince of Wales Island. Less than 400 souls. The clouds hang low, as usual. Drizzle. The fresh totem pole stands. "We're raising the next generation of cultural warriors", says the mayor. The man from the Haida tribe is serious about it. For what had happened in the past should never ever be repeated. The Native people almost lost their history. The totem poles were silent.
